❄️ Winter wellness tips with Te Whare Tapa Whā
The Te Whare Tapa Wha model represents wellbeing as a wharenui (meeting house) with four walls: taha tinana (physical), taha wairua (spiritual), taha whānau (family/social), and taha hinengaro (mental/emotional) with
a foundation of te taiao (the environment).
Here's a few tips to help you stay well through the colder months and take care of your body and mind.
Taha tinana - Physical wellbeing
- Prioritise healthy eating habits
- Stay hydrated
- Keep active – even light activity improves energy and mood
- Wrap up warm, get enough rest
Taha hinengaro – Mental and emotional wellbeing
- Take a moment to notice how you’re feeling
- Take steps to reduce stress - try mindfulness, deep breathing
- Limit screen time especially endlessly scrolling negative news
Taha wairua – Spiritual wellbeing
- Reflect on what’s important to you
- Make
time for things that you enjoy
Taha whānau – Social wellbeing- Connection matters - keep in touch with friends, whānau and colleagues especially in winter
- Reach out to others when you need support, or someone to talk to
Te taiao – The
environment- Ensure you have a healthy workspace with lots of natural light if you can
- Get outside into nature when you can – wrap up well, even short walks in the fresh air can help

Your learner wellbeing is important to us. We value your feedback
To help us improve the wellbeing support we offer to all our learners, we’re again running a short three-minute wellbeing

This bi-annual survey aims to monitor learner wellbeing across the country, and is completely anonymous so no-one will be able to link your responses to you. If you complete the survey before 12 noon Friday 25 July 2025, you can enter a prize draw to win a Digital Prize Pack valued at approximately $2,460 containing an HP Pavilion 16" Laptop, Targus Cypress 15.6 Hero backpack - Grey, Technics EAH-A800 Wireless Noise Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones - Black and Logitech G309 Lightspeed Gaming Mouse by clicking on a separate link to the prize draw form. Ebony is part of a cohort of staff at her workplace all working towards their Level 4 Youth Work Apprenticeship.

To support the success of all Level 4 Dementia Care learners, our national dementia training facilitators are providing a series of

Each session focuses on one specific assessment task, allowing learners to attend only the sessions related to the modules you need help with. We have scheduled both morning and evening options to accommodate varying shift patterns. See the website for a schedule of upcoming sessions. These sessions are available nationally to all our Careerforce dementia care learners. You are
invited to join any of the sessions that interest you. Please note that you DO NOT have to pre-register for these sessions, simply join online on the day.

Reaching remote learners – West Coast Wananga boosts apprentice engagement
“The West Coast is a unique
environment,” says Cath Jennings, a Workplace Advisor at Careerforce.
“It’s quite isolated. Workers are spread out and public transport isn’t always available, which can make access to learning support more difficult.”
Cath and her colleague Steve Peseta, an Apprenticeship Advisor, work for Careerforce. Since 2024, the Christchurch-based duo made a concerted effort to provide more hands-on support to their learners, including those completing apprenticeship programmes.
Careerforce work-based apprenticeships typically span 21 months, with most learning and assessment done online via the Careerforce learning platform. But Cath and Steve saw the need for extra face-to-face support. “We started running 1-2 day wānanga across the West Coast, to get learners more actively engaged and help them progress through their programme modules,” Cath explains.
With the success of wānanga for apprentices, Cath and Steve have now started
running 3-4 hour wānanga for Level 3 Youth Work learners. “It’s about listening to the organisations and the ākonga (learners) we support and meeting their needs,” says Cath.
