❄️ Winter wellness tips with Te Whare Tapa Whā
The Te Whare Tapa Wha model represents wellbeing as a wharenui (meeting house) with four walls: taha tinana (physical), taha wairua (spiritual), taha whānau (family/social), and taha hinengaro (mental/emotional) with
a foundation of te taiao (the environment).
Here's a few tips to help you stay well through the colder months and take care of your body and mind.
Taha tinana - Physical wellbeing
- Prioritise healthy eating habits
- Stay hydrated
- Keep active – even light activity improves energy and
mood
- Wrap up warm, get enough rest
Taha hinengaro – Mental and emotional wellbeing
- Take a moment to notice how you’re feeling
- Take steps to reduce stress - try mindfulness, deep breathing
- Limit screen time especially endlessly scrolling negative news
Taha wairua – Spiritual wellbeing
- Reflect on what’s important to you
- Make time for things that you enjoy
Taha whānau – Social wellbeing- Connection matters - keep in touch with friends, whānau and colleagues especially in winter
- Reach out to others when you need support, or someone to talk to
Te taiao – The environment- Ensure you have a healthy workspace with lots of natural light if you can
- Get outside into nature when you can – wrap up well, even short walks in the fresh air can help

Ebony Poutu was content in her role in shoe retail until a video about youth work opened her eyes to a new career path. Ebony is now a Driving School Coordinator at Youth Inspire and is working towards her New Zealand Apprenticeship in Youth Work through Careerforce. In her role as Driving School Coordinator, Ebony is responsible for helping rangatahi to achieve their learner, restricted and
full driving licences. She finds her role deeply rewarding,

“You can see the long-term effects not only on the individuals, but on their whānau and community as well. So even though it feels like we’ve only got this short time with them, that impact can have very lasting outcomes”.
Ebony is part of a cohort of staff at her workplace all working towards their Level 4 Youth Work Apprenticeship.

Support and advice for apprentices

IMPORTANT - only submit one task at a time
Achieve Study Hubs: Drop in, study, achieve
Please remember, when completing your apprenticeship assessments, it is important that you ONLY submit ONE task within a module for marking at a time. Feel free to work on other tasks, but please don’t submit these until the first task has been assessed. This is because we need to give you feedback to help guide you, before you move forward to the next one.
Do you need extra support with your training programme? Our Achieve Study Hubs are face-to-face sessions where you can drop in, ask questions, meet with other learners, and receive help with your learning. See the full
schedule on our website. To register, RSVP by completing the online form on our website.

Reaching remote learners – West Coast Wananga boosts apprentice engagement
“The West Coast is a unique
environment,” says Cath Jennings, a Workplace Advisor at Careerforce.
“It’s quite isolated. Workers are spread out and public transport isn’t always available, which can make access to learning support more difficult.”
Cath and her colleague Steve Peseta, an Apprenticeship Advisor, work for Careerforce. Since 2024, the Christchurch-based duo made a concerted effort to provide more hands-on support to their learners, including those completing apprenticeship programmes.
Careerforce work-based apprenticeships typically span 21 months, with most learning and assessment done online via the Careerforce learning platform. But Cath and Steve saw the need for extra face-to-face support. “We started running 1-2 day wānanga across the West Coast, to get learners more actively engaged and help them progress through their programme modules,” Cath explains.

"Do a little bit as often as you can. It can be hard to find time to lock in a few hours of study each week, but it can be much easier to do 15 mins here and there when you have the time."

“The programme reinforced what I knew. But it also made me think of things differently. It made me much more aware of others and our different learning styles”.
