Micro-credential Overview

This micro-credential is designed to recognise the skills and knowledge required to develop knowledge and understanding of suicide prevention in an Aotearoa New Zealand context.


Graduates will be able to:

  • Explain suicide and suicidal ideation in an Aotearoa New Zealand context.
  • Recognise causes of suicide and the prevalence.
  • Identify and explain the roles of natural, local and national supports.
  • Follow procedures used in a local suicide prevention strategy.
  • Identify and explain response types and approaches for a person experiencing
    suicidal ideation.
  • Describe postvention roles and supporting the bereaved.
  • Explain their own legal obligations and role boundaries.
  • Appreciate the impacts of suicide on themselves and other support workers, and
    approaches to self-care.

Prerequisites

Learners need to be working in a relevant sector. Learners are also required to have reasonable computer literacy as micro-credential assessments are only offered online (via Aka Toi).

Learning and Assessment Resources

Online learning and assessments will be completed via Careerforce’s online learning platform, Aka Toi. Learning is also available via the Le Va Lifekeepers training programme.

This micro-credential is ideal for Support Workers right across the health and wellbeing sector. For example; in mental health, addiction, youth work, disability, aged care, in the community, and residential care.

Learning and assessments will be completed via Careerforce’s online learning and assessment portal, Aka Toi or via Le Va LifeKeepers training programme.

The enrolment fee for this micro-credential is $85 (inc GST) NZD. The employer usually pays the fees for staff to enrol in these programmes. To enrol in a Careerforce programme, you must be currently employed and have the support of your employer.
